Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES)

Multiwavelength Carbon Analyzer DRI Model 2015

The DRI Model 2015 Multi-Wavelength Thermal/Optical Carbon Analyzer has been used to quantify the organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) fractions in aerosol samples collected on quartz fiber filters at wavelengths of 405, 445, 532, 635, 780, 808, and 980 nm. The additional optical information can be used to estimate the concentration of brown carbon (BrC) in each sample.

Thermal/optical Carbon Analyser DRI Model 2001

DRI (Desert Research Institute), Thermal/optical Carbon Analyzer Model 2001 A is used to quantify the organic carbon and elemental carbon (OC and EC) in particulate matter. Thermally fractionated organic and elemental carbon concentrations can also be obtained. The instrument uses a laser (632 nm) to correct for 'pyrolisis carbon'.

Muffle Furnace System

The Muffle Furnace is primarily intended to be used for reducing organics on quartz-fiber filters by placing a batch of 47 mm quartz filters in a large alumina crucible and heating up to 900°C.


The microbalance will be used to weigh 47 mm aerosol filter substrates before and after sample collection. Electric charge on the particles collected into the filter substrates are neutralazied prior to weighing.

Aerosol re-suspension chamber

It is used to re-suspend dust from from different sources. In conjunction with an air sampler, the re-suspended dust is than collected onto desired filter substrates in laboratory.

Optical Transmissometer

The SootScan™ Model OT21 Optical Transmissometer determines optical attenuation and BC / BrC mass results. The analysis is performed at two wavelengths (880 nm, definitive for “Black” Carbon; and 370 nm, where enhanced optical absorption may indicate the presence of “Brown” Carbon aerosol derived from biomass combustion.) The analysis is non-contact, non-contaminating and non-destructive.

MiniVol Tactical Air Sampler (TAS) is an impactor based portable ambient air sampler designed on patented low flow technology, developed in collaboration by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Airmetrics, USA. This instrument is equipped to collect aerosols in two size fractions - PM10 and PM2.5 with appropriate impactors. It can also be used to collect total suspended particles (TSP).

This high-sensitivity instrument allows measurements in forward and backward scattering directions using 450nm, 532nm, and 632nm wavelengths and calculate light-scattering coefficient of atmospheric aerosols.

Magee Scientific Aethalometer provides real-time measurement of aerosol Black Carbon. The model AE33 provide data at 1 min time resolution using DualSpot technology and optical absorption at 7 wavelengths from 370nm to 950nm.

Optical Particle Sizer (OPS)

This is a light, portable spectrometer that provides fast and accurate measurement of particle concentration and particle size distribution using single particle counting technology. The OPS measures particles from 0.3 to 10 µm in 16 user adjustable size channels. The measured particles can also be collected on a built-in filter for further analysis.

Class 1000 Laminar Cabinet

This clean room conforms to Class 1000 or ISO 6 standards. Additionally, this is a controlled environment where the temperature is maintained at 22±1̊ C and the relative humidity is maintained at 35±2%. The temperature and relative humidity control permit de-watering of ambient aerosol and thus, measurement of particulate matter mass in conformity with the operational standards of most international agencies.
